Excerpts

The roots of Christianity are deeply embedded in the soil of the Holy Land. In a small town in the Land of Israel, Nazareth, Mary was informed of the anticipated birth of Jesus; the son of God was born in Bethlehem, and he worked and preached in the Galilee; in Jerusalem, where Jesus arrived late in his life, he participated in the Last Supper before being taken to trial. He was crucified in Jerusalem, buried there and ascended to heaven from Jerusalem after his resurrection. In this book, David Rapp, a journalist and scholar, invites the reader on a journey to the spectacular stones that comprise the mosaic of Christian experience in Israel, examining more than fifty churches and sites throughout the country. The book gives expression to the various denominations in contemporary Christianity, seeking to present a rich diversity of traditions, including both the central and secondary voices in the complex Christian ensemble. It examines sites that conduct religious activity today and turns a spotlight on the important and interesting Christian minority within Israeli society.
