All Upton knows is his very limited view of the world which has limited his hope for happiness. Born in Canada and raised on Cape Cod he has given up on finding a better life and has settled for being a townie. He wants for little more than to ride his motorcycle and have a good meal; neither of which happens very often. But one day he meets a kindred spirit and they find that together they are greater than the sum of their parts. Together they find happiness and the strength to endure in their struggle for the same.
Set in 1985 “The Beauty of Aqua” is an exploration into what makes for a good life today and how we hope we will be remembered after we are no longer here. It is also an exploration into the foods of Central Vietnam and in particular the City of Đà Nẵng.

Excerpts
The room is small and brightly lit from the late-morning sun. It is a traditional Vietnamese-family-altar-room. The only furniture in it is a waist-height credenza topped with a family-altar adorned with fruit, freshly prepared foods and a half-dozen photographs of departed loved ones all in light-blue backgrounds. Bright light streams in from the open windows highlighting the smoke from the burning incense. Its smell intermixed with those of the dishes of food and lemon blossoms from just outside the tightly packed room. There is a somber tone among the family members, some with tears in their eyes. They are performing a one-year-death-anniversary-ceremony. Sitting squarely on the altar are the portraits of an elderly man and woman also in front of light-blue backgrounds. Between those two photographs sits something unusual: a small statue of a rooster ablaze in a fiery red, orange and yellow.
